New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams’s administration is worried that TikTok threatens the city’s technical security. Consequently, city agencies must remove the app within 30 days, leading to its removal from city-owned devices and networks. Notably, New York State previously banned TikTok on state-issued mobile devices.
TikTok claims it won’t share U.S. user data with the Chinese government and has taken steps to enhance user privacy and security.
Top U.S. security officials like FBI Director Christopher Wray and CIA Director William Burns warn about TikTok’s risks. Wray stated that China could exploit TikTok to manipulate software and influence Americans’ views, raising significant national security concerns.
In 2020, former President Donald Trump’s attempt to ban TikTok downloads was thwarted by court decisions.
Numerous U.S. states and local governments restrict TikTok on government devices. Montana recently passed a law prohibiting statewide TikTok use, though legal challenges are ongoing. The ban is scheduled to start on January 1st.
