Cybersecurity researchers are concerned about a new ransomware strain that merges the most effective elements of existing variants. The Israeli cybersecurity firm Check Point discovered the ransomware during an investigation into an attack on a US company and gave it the name “Rorschach.”
According to Sergey Shykevich, Check Point Research’s threat intelligence group manager, Rorschach is one of the fastest and most sophisticated ransomware strains ever encountered. The malware was named Rorschach because each person who examined it saw something different, much like the famous psychological test. Rorschach has distinct characteristics from different ransomware families, differentiating it from other variants.
Sergey Shykevich, the threat intelligence group manager at Check Point Research, stated that Rorschach is one of the most sophisticated and quickest ransomware strains ever encountered. Researchers named it Rorschach because, similar to the famous psychological test, each person who examined the malware saw something unique. Rorschach has distinct characteristics taken from different ransomware families that set it apart from other variants.
The responders noted that the attack was unusual because the hackers did not use an alias and had no association with any known group. Furthermore, the ransomware spread automatically across the system and wiped out event logs on infected devices.
