The local government of Modesto confirmed Ransom attack on Modesto city a attack over a month ago, and now a long-running cybercrime operation has claimed responsibility for the incident. The Snatch group has taken credit for the attack but did not provide any details regarding the amount of data taken or when it will be released.
Andrew Gonzales, the legislative affairs manager for Modesto. However, Gonzales did not respond to queries regarding the payment of ransom or the amount of ransom involved.
While the city of Oakland was dealing with its own ransomware incident, an attack hit Modesto which was located about an hour and a half away. Multiple reports indicate that the attack impacted police car laptops, which resulted in the police department having to resort and manually dispatch call details.
On March 8, city officials sent out breach notification letters revealing that the attack took place between January 31 and February 3. The city’s IT department detected the effects of the attack on February 3. Hackers accessed sensitive personal information including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical information, driver’s license numbers, and state-issued identification numbers.
