Leaders from the National Security Agency (NSA) and U.S. Cyber Command have revealed their comprehensive strategies for harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) in national security.
On Tuesday, leaders from both the National Security Agency (NSA) and U.S. Cyber Command announced they had completed their individual assessments of how they plan to use artificial intelligence (AI) in the future. Army Gen. Paul Nakasone, speaking at the Billington Cybersecurity Summit in Washington, D.C. – an event sponsored by Recorded Future, the parent company of The Record – underscored that both organizations possess extensive experience with AI.
Gen. Nakasone stated, “We’re no newcomers to AI; it’s a well-established part of our history.”
Recent concerns regarding potential security implications of AI have drawn significant attention within the federal government, reaching all the way to the White House. In July, major AI companies voluntarily committed to prioritizing safety and security in their development of AI technology.
Concerning the NSA, Gen. Nakasone disclosed that the agency recently concluded a thorough 60-day study, focusing specifically on the potential impacts of generative AI. He mentioned that the NSA has already incorporated AI into its signals intelligence missions and is now exploring its expansion into cybersecurity operations, as well as its application to various “business functions” like accounting and compliance.
Moreover, Gen. Nakasone stressed that a recent defense policy bill mandated Cyber Command to create a five-year plan for how the digital warfare unit will utilize AI in cyberspace operations going forward. He confirmed the existence of this plan while refraining from disclosing specific details.
