Massive Data Breach: Mr. Cooper Exposes 14.7 Million Customers’ Personal Details!

Mr. Cooper Cybersecurity Alert

Mr. Cooper issues Cybersecurity Alert: 14.7M customers notified of data exposure in the wake of a recent cyberattack.

Mr. Cooper warns 14.7 million customers, past and present mortgage holders, about a recent cyberattack exposing their data. Formerly Nationstar Mortgage LLC, Mr. Cooper, a Dallas-based mortgage lending firm with about 9,000 employees, announced the breach in early November 2023, discovered on October 30, 2023. In response, the company shut down all IT systems, including the online payment portal for loans and mortgages.

A week later, Mr. Cooper confirmed that attackers accessed customer data, excluding financial information. The exact breached data is still under investigation. Today, the company reported to the Maine Attorney General that the incident impacted 14,690,284 people, exposing personal details such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security Numbers (SSNs), dates of birth, and bank account numbers.

This exposure puts individuals at risk of phishing, scams, and social engineering attacks, along with potential bank fraud and identity theft due to leaked bank account numbers. Mr. Cooper swiftly acted, securing systems, changing account passwords, and conducting a detailed review to identify personal information in the impacted files.

The notice to affected customers emphasizes ongoing dark web monitoring, finding no evidence of further sharing, publication, or misuse of the data related to the incident.

Recipients are urged to stay vigilant against unsolicited communications and enroll in the offered 24-month identity protection service.

Details about the cyberattack type remain undisclosed, and no ransomware groups have claimed responsibility for the attack on Mr. Cooper.
