LockBit Ransomware’s Threat to Sensitive Data

LockBit Ransomware Threat

LockBit ransomware group posted a threat on Friday, alleging the theft of sensitive data from Boeing.

On Friday, the cybercrime group made a significant addition to their leak site, alleging the theft of sensitive data from the company. Their ultimatum was clear: they threatened to publish the data unless Boeing negotiates a ransom with the gang.

The posted message read, ‘We’ve exfiltrated a massive amount of sensitive data, poised for publication if Boeing fails to contact us within the deadline.’

Despite the claim, the LockBit ransomware group hasn’t shared any samples of the stolen data, presumably to protect the manufacturer. While Boeing conducts an investigation, they have yet to confirm a potential compromise or disclose specific details regarding the incident.

Responding to an inquiry from SecurityWeek, Boeing stated, ‘We are assessing this claim.’

Operating under the ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) business model since at least 2020, LockBit has developed several major versions of its malware.

LockBit affiliates target organizations across critical infrastructure, energy, government, financial services, food and agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, and various other sectors. LockBit is believed to have carried out approximately 1,700 attacks against US entities, amassing around $91 million in ransom payments.

The cybercrime gang is known for publicly listing victim names and engaging in secondary extortion after compromising third-party providers.

Utilizing freeware and open source tools, the group exploits numerous vulnerabilities, including those that have been newly reported.

Understanding and addressing the growing menace of ransomware attacks, particularly exemplified by the tactics of groups like LockBit, is crucial for bolstering cybersecurity measures and preempting potential cyber threats.
