LetMeSpy, a Poland-based Android spyware maker, announces permanent shutdown after a June security breach.
LetMeSpy, a spyware maker based in Poland, announced its closure due to a security breach in June. During the breach, attackers gained unauthorized access to the company’s systems, stealing a significant amount of user data and wiping the servers clean.
The company’s website displays a message titled “permanent shutdown,” stating that all operations will cease from August 31st, 2023.
The stolen user data includes call logs, SMS messages, location data, and possibly information provided during the registration process. LetMeSpy marketed itself as a parental and employee control service, allowing users to read text messages, access call logs, and track locations on targeted devices.
The spyware maker claims to have promptly blocked access to user accounts following the initial attacks. Users who want to retrieve any remaining data should directly contact LetMeSpy before the end of September, as any remaining data will be permanently deleted thereafter.
A copy of the LetMeSpy website saved in late January 2023 shows that the spyware was installed on over 236,000 devices. The company boasted about snooping on an astonishing number of text messages, call logs, and locations, reaching 65 million text messages, nearly 40 million call logs, and over 43 million locations.
It’s essential to note that the LetMeSpy app falls under the category of spyware known as stalkerware. This type of malware invades target privacy at a much more intimate level than regular spyware. Experts have warned about the dangers of using stalkerware, as it can cause severe psychological damage, including fear, anger, hypervigilance, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
