INL, a major U.S. security lab, has issued breach notifications to individuals potentially impacted by a recent cyberattack. Following this, the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) sent breach notification letters related to the November 20th cyberattack.
The attackers breached an off-site data center, exposing information on INL employees, former employees, spouses, and dependents. INL emphasized that its internal networks and databases remained uncompromised. Despite this, the cyberattack on this crucial U.S. nuclear facility triggered an investigation by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.
The notification letter confirmed exposure of sensitive information, including names, Social Security numbers, salary details, and banking information. Some individuals had only their names and dates of birth compromised. The exposed payroll data covers employees, former employees, and retirees up to June 1st, 2023.
INL submitted details to the Maine Attorney General, revealing that 45,047 individuals were affected. In response, the lab committed to offering complimentary identity protection services. With a history in nuclear power research since the 1940s, INL is a crucial laboratory, employing over 5,300.
