Ferrari has disclosed a data breach caused by unauthorized individuals who gained access to some of the company’s IT systems. After receiving a ransom demand, the company notified its customers about the incident through letters expressing regret for the occurrence.
The Italian luxury sports car maker reported that customer information such as names, addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers were exposed as a result of the breach.
According to a statement by Ferrari N.V., the Italian subsidiary Ferrari S.p.A. was contacted by a threat actor demanding a ransom related to certain client contact details. However, Ferrari has not discovered any evidence of unauthorized access or theft of sensitive payment information like payment details and bank account numbers.
Ferrari promptly launched an investigation in collaboration with a leading global third-party cybersecurity firm upon receiving the ransom demand.
Ferrari has taken action to protect its compromised systems and guarantees that the attack has not affected its operations. After discovering the breach, Ferrari quickly notified authorities and hired a cybersecurity firm to evaluate the extent of the damage.
Ferrari has a policy of not conceding to ransom demands, as it can promote criminal activity and encourage more attacks. Rather than paying the ransom, Ferrari has informed its clients of the incident and the possibility of their data being compromised.
