Elon Musk’s high-rise headquarters in San Francisco, previously known as Twitter, removed the gigantic X after receiving numerous complaints about safety concerns and the disruptive glare from the illuminated letter.
The San Francisco building department logged 24 complaints during the weekend when the large X was installed on the downtown headquarters’ rooftop on Market Street. Neighbors expressed their discontent with the intrusive lighting.
This decision followed Musk’s post. The enigmatic billionaire, who acquired the company for a staggering $44 billion in October, announced that the newly named firm, X, would remain in San Francisco despite the city’s recent challenges with companies relocating elsewhere.
In his city post, Musk expressed loyalty to San Francisco, stating, “Beautiful San Francisco, though others forsake you, we will always be your friend.

However, the big X didn’t stay for long, despite Musk’s grand gesture to the Golden Gate City.
A Grand Gesture to the Golden Gate City
On Monday, a spokesperson from the city Department of Building Inspection reported that building inspectors had witnessed the dismantling of the structure. The property owner will face fees for the unpermitted installation of the illuminated structure. Meanwhile, X claimed that the removal was voluntary.
Over the weekend, locals recorded videos of the giant X, capturing its glowing, pulsing, and strobing effects, and some criticized the intrusive lights. @DollyMarlowe, an X user, expressed astonishment at the flagrant lack of consideration shown by the installation. Another X user, @itsmefrenchy123, posted on Friday, expressing their anger and imagining the bright logo right across from their bedroom.

Like all of Musk’s great ideas, he had to walk it back within 72 hours. pic.twitter.com/Zp1sB6p2IN
Over the weekend, a Department of Building Inspection inspector filed a report stating that company representatives denied roof access twice to city officials who were attempting to inspect the logo. The inspector also mentioned that one representative claimed the sign was only temporary.
After the removal, Musk posted a message to his X followers on Monday, stressing the significance of having more people work in San Francisco to ensure the city’s survival.
