Congressional Health Data Breach: Personal Information of Members Exposed

Congressional Health Data Breach

On Wednesday, DC Health Link, a health insurance marketplace, notified members of the House of Representatives and their staff that their personal information may have been compromised in a significant data breach .

Catherine Szpindor stated that the size and extent of the breach are currently unknown, but the FBI confirmed that hundreds of Members and House staff had their account information and Personal Identifiable Information (PII) stolen. Szpindor also made it clear that the Members of the House of Representatives were not the specific targets of the attack. She advised those affected to place a freeze on their family’s credit with all major credit bureaus.

The Senate Sergeant at Arms was also informed by law enforcement about the DC Health Link data breach, but it appears to have impacted fewer people in the Senate. Users received information that the breach did not compromise any personally identifiable information, except for names, email addresses, dates of enrollment, and family relationships of those affected.

During his weekly press conference on Thursday morning, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that he and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are working together in a bipartisan manner to address the issue and investigate the implications of the breach.
