Ransomware Attack on Point32Health Sparks Security Concerns

Attack on Point32Health

A ransomware attack has affected multiple systems of Point32Health, a health insurance company in New England that serves over two million individuals. The company detected the attack on April 17 in systems related to “service members, accounts, brokers, and providers.” Point32Health, which resulted from the merger of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan, has proactively taken certain systems offline to contain the threat. Third-party cybersecurity experts are investigating and remedying the situation. In addition, the company has notified law enforcement and regulators.

While working to restore the impacted systems, Point32Health has advised members to call a provided phone number for any emergencies. The company is providing workarounds to ensure that members receive the services they require. Furthermore, they will contact any customers whose information may have been compromised during the attack.

Point32Health offers services to individuals in Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, including those eligible for Medicare and Medicaid. It is the second largest insurer in Massachusetts, and Charlie Baker, the former CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, served as the state’s last governor for a decade.

No ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Cyber underwriter Corvus Insurance researchers have observed a significant surge in ransomware incidents that target healthcare organizations. The researchers analyzed data from the dark web and ransomware leak sites, which revealed that hospitals and healthcare organizations experienced a 750% increase in attacks year-over-year in March 2023.
